Descendants of John A. Sr. Satterfield
Generation No. 1
1. JOHN A. SR.1 SATTERFIELD was born April 1832 in South Carolina, and died September 08, 1902 in Pickens County, Ga.. He married HARRIET STRIPLAND September 22, 1861 in Dawson County, Ga., daughter of CYNTHIA JANE STRIPLAND. She was born 1834 in South Carolina.
Notes for JOHN A. SR. SATTERFIELD:
He enlisted in Co. I, 37 Georgia Volunteer of Gordons Brigade. He is also listed as Company N and L of the 38 Georgia Infantry of Wright’s Legion. The explanation for being listed in so many divisions is that after he was taken down by disease and spent time in hospitals and convalescent camps, as he could not join his regiment he was absorbed into the others. He made his home in Georgia, in January of 1852. He filed his application for Injured Soldiers Pension in January 10, 1887. His application For Soldiers Pension reads:
Personally coming before me, C. J. Cornelision, Ordinary in and for the county of Pickens, Georgia, John A. Satterfield of said county, an applicant for the benefits allowed by the state of Georgia for disabled Confederate soldiers who in addition to his former affidavit claims that he enlisted in the Confederates Service in Co. N, 38 regiment Georgia Volunteers. He volunteered in 1861 and while in the said services at Savannah Georgia in the line of duty in the summer of 1863, at the Battle of Bomar Artillery, he was taken down with a disease of the tonsils, throat and glands. He remained in the hospital for some time, was sent to convalescents camp. He was furloughed from the home and returned to the hospital at Augusta and remained there until just before the war ended. He said after his tonsils were cut out before his camp in Savannah. He was sent to the hospital and that the glands of his jaw ulcerated and run inside his mouth and outside through a hole about 3/4 of an inch below his right ear. This continued to run corruption for twelve years continuously, and when it stopped running below his ear it commenced rising about his right ear and eye and continued to rise since then. That at no time he has been able to take solid food in his mouth only as he pushes it but cannot chew with his teeth. That he can only open his mouth 1/4 of an inch and the whole right side of his head hurts and aches continuously, he is unable to stoop down without great pain and that is reason of said disability that he contracted in the service. He is unable to perform ordinary labor due to not being able to speak, pain and the hole in his neck has ugly scarring and the rising is great in his neck and face. He was awarded his Pension and collected it from 1888 to his death September 20, 1902.
The 1900 census of Pickens County shows that John and family are renting a farm and his occupation is farmer. Harriet had born 6 children and only 3 are alive at that time.

Notes for HARRIET STRIPLAND:
Stripland has been spelled Stripling, Striplin and many other ways.
Harriet was married before John she had a Daughter Martha J. who was listed in the census records as a step Daughter.
She applied for Widow's Pension in 1902, two weeks after her husband, John A. Satterfield, died. John died September 08, 1902 in Jasper, Pickens County, Georgia. On the application it states that she and John married in 1859, (it was 1861) and that they lived together at his time of death in Jasper, Pickens County, Georgia. She received her pension from Pickens County until 1903 when she transferred it to Forsythe County, Ga, where her brother W. B. Stripland enlisted and lived. Harriet transferred her pension to Forsythe, presumably to the home of her brother or brothers family. I believe this is where Maggie and her mother Harriet are buried.
